The song peaked at number two on the US Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart, making it the band's highest-charting single on that chart. The song was written by Slipknot members Corey Taylor, Mick Thomson, Craig Jones, Sid Wilson, and Jay Weinberg. Taylor is the only member who is credited with writing the lyrics. It was released on October 5, 2018, as the lead single for the band's third studio album, Hard to Imagine the Neighbourhood Ever Changing. The song is about the difficult decisions one needs to make in life, and how those decisions will ultimately define them. It is a midtempo alternative rock song featuring distorted guitars and dense production. The chorus includes the lyrics "I'm just trying to play the devil's advocate / Even if I don't understand it".
