"Free Bird" is a song by the American rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. It was first released in 1974 as the opening track from their debut album, Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd. The song has become a staple of classic rock radio, and is one of the band's most popular and well-known songs. It is often considered one of the greatest rock songs of all time. The song was written by lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Allen Collins, and was inspired by an incident at a concert in 1972 where a fan shouted out for the band to play "Free Bird". Van Zant said that he wanted to write a song that would make the fan happy, and that would also be a tribute to the memory of Collins' brother, who had recently died in a plane crash. The song is in the key of E major and is known for its long guitar solo, which was played by Collins and Steve Gaines. The solo was voted the greatest guitar solo of all time by Guitar World magazine in 1998. The song was recorded in 1973 at the Record Plant studio in Los Angeles. It was produced by Al Kooper and Lynyrd Skynyrd
