"Rivers and Roads" is a folk-rock song by American folk rock band The Head and the Heart. It was released as the second single from the band’s self-titled debut album in 2011. The song was written by band members Josiah Johnson and Jonathan Russell and was produced by the band in collaboration with producer Shawn Simmons. The song is a narrative folk-rock ballad about leaving home in search of an opportunity. The lyrics paint an image of a young person leaving their family and friends to go out into the world and find success. Musically, the song combines acoustic guitars and banjo with a traditional folk-rock arrangement. The song’s chorus is an infectious sing-along refrain. The song was a commercial success, reaching number 5 on the US Alternative Songs chart. It has since become a staple of the band’s live performances, and has been featured in numerous films and television shows, including the hit series Parenthood.
